Advantages of the Mock Interview

No one attends a Job or Placement Interview for the sake of fun. However, most candidates attend it without proper preparation and this is the main reason why so many fail to get the job they aspire for and end up accepting jobs much below their true potential.

Achieving success in job or placement interviews is certainly the aim of all those who appear for such interviews. However, very few really know how to achieve success. Some candidates think that reading General Knowledge guides is enough, while others think reading books like; “How to achieve success in Interviews” is the best way to prepare for job or placement interviews. Undoubtedly, reading a book or a guide will help you to learn theoretically about job interviews. However, if your learning is to be effective, you must also undergo experiential learning. For example; Can you learn to swim by reading a book or a guide? We know that one cannot do so. To learn to swim, you must get into a pool or a river and learn swimming by the experiential learning process. There is no easy way. Similarly, a Mock ( Rehearsal ) Interview can provide you an opportunity for ‘experiential learning’ that can help you to improve your performance and thereby increase your chances of success in Job Interviews.

One of the common mistakes that candidates make is to go for a job interview without proper preparation. Since wrong or incorrect answers are not corrected during the interview, they often repeat the same mistakes, interview after interview and later due to their increasing age, get compelled to accept jobs much below their capabilities. It is to help employment seekers to properly prepare for any job interview ( irrespective of post or designation ) and achieve success early to avoid becoming age barred that CGA conducts “Mock Interview” of 1½ hrs to 2 hrs. duration and “Interview Tips” of 45 minutes duration.

BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS – Why are they asked ?

At any job or placement interview, candidates will be asked two kinds of questions . They can be broadly classified as ‘Behavioral Questions’ and ‘Technical Questions’ . Generally , a job or placement interview will begin with the interviewer asking the behavioral question ; “Could you please introduce yourself ? ” . The question may seem to be simple . However, the manner in which the candidate responds to this question will give the interviewer/s clues about the quality of the candidate’s communication skills, self-confidence, achievement motivation etc. In other words , behavioral questions are asked by interviewers to assess a candidate’s personality or soft skills . The reason being that; just as assessing the quality of the technical skills a candidate possesses is important to decide how s/he will perform on the job , it is also critical to assess the soft skills or behavioral skills of the candidate as it determines the overall personal productivity potential of the candidate.

Our present day educational system enables a student to develop a wide range of technical skills , but very unfortunately, it doesn’t enable him or her to systematically or effectively develop his personality or soft skills that employers give importance to. The ‘ Value Added Interview Training’ that we conduct over a period of two weeks or more , depending on the candidates requirements, enables a job aspirant to develop soft skills as well as prepare to truthfully and convincingly answer behavioural questions that are asked to assess the candidate’s personality.

Whatever be your educational qualification, age or career goal, do you think that you can be asked the ‘Behavioral Questions’ given below and many more similar questions, at the job or placement interview you plan to attend – sooner or later ?

  • Why do you want to work in our company ?
  • What do you know about our company ?
  • If selected, how long will you work with us ?
  • How will you react, if you are told that you are not selected ?
  • What are your weaknesses ?
  • What salary do you expect ?
  • Why do you want to change your present job ? ( asked to those with work experience )
  • As a Fresher, how will you overcome your inexperience ?…etc.

If “Yes” is your answer, then the ‘Interview Training ‘ that we provide will be useful to you no matter what your educational qualification, age or work experience . In other words , Freshers will find the interview training we conduct useful, just as much as those with years of work experience. Similarly, irrespective of whether you plan to attend an interview for a Job in India or abroad the ‘Interview Training ‘ that we provide will be useful to you.

Note : To give more convincing answers to behavioral questions, your answers must match your personality, present circumstances etc. On this aspect our HRD Professionals will guide you individually and in greater detail, if you choose the Value Added Interview Training Module. For more details please visit our training center at YMCA Cross Road , Calicut-1 and meet our Counsellor .

ADVANTAGES OF UNDERGOING THE VALUE ADDED TRAINING PROGRAMS

  • Video & PPt. aided explanation in English or Malayalam. ( This video & power point aided method of training makes it easier for candidates to understand various concepts about job & placement interviews , personality development etc. It also helps to easily memorize these concepts for future application ) .
  • Duration – longer than Economy Module .
  • Certificate provide for Value Added Mentoring Programs.

( The certificates that we will provide to you if you undergo the various mentoring programs we conduct, can be mentioned in your CV or Bio-data under the heading ‘Self-improvement Programs Attended’ and thus be used to make your bio-data’s content more attractive . In other words, when an Interviewer observes that you have undergone self-improvement training on your own initiative, s/he will consider you as a motivated person who takes  initiative and  is a continuous learner with a mind open to new ideas and therefore quick to adapt to change and that this nature of yours will also be of benefit to the company - that interviews you. If such a ‘positive first impression’ emerges about you, before the interview or during the early stages of an interview, it will be to your advantage .

TWO FREQUENTLY ASKED INTERVIEW RELATED QUESTIONS

Q1. Do you conduct the same kind of Mock Interview for candidates with different qualifications and different job aspirations?

A1. The Mock Interviews we conduct have been designed to give individual attention to candidates. Hence, two or three candidates with different qualifications or different job aspirations sitting in the same session / room does not arise. Secondly, at all job interviews irrespective of whether the selection is being done for senior level posts of Engineer, Manager, Programmer etc or junior level post of Accountant, Clerk, Mechanic etc. certain “common factors” are considered for assessment. For example; Engineers, Managers, Programmers, Accountants, Clerks, Mechanics, etc. can all be asked the following questions during a Job Interview.

  • “Why do you want to join our company ?”
  • “ If selected , how long will you work with us ? ”
  • “What are your weaknesses ?”
  • “What salary do you expect ?”

and so on. Similarly no matter for which post a candidate is interviewed his or her body language, handshake, mannerisms etc. will also be assessed. It is taking into consideration these common factors that Mock Interviews have been designed. ( Why and how Managers, Engineers etc., must answer the above given “’behavioural questions’ in a different way, than Clerks, Mechanics etc., will be explained during the Mock Interview ). Hence, both; those who want to work in senior posts like; Engineer, Manager, Programmer etc and also those who want to work in junior posts like; Clerk, Front Office Staff, Accountant, Mechanic, Service Technician etc., will find the Mock Interview very useful. However, to make Mock Interviews more effective it has been divided into 5 categories. You can choose to attend a Mock Interview conducted by our Interviewers i.e., Management & HRD Professionals under a category you find most suitable:

  • Category – 1 :( For ambitious school / college students ) Students interested in joining Professional Colleges for taking B Tech, MBA, MCA, etc.or joining NDA, CDS, OTS etc., will find Mock Interviews conducted under this category very useful.

  • Category – 2 :(For fresh employment seekers –those without any previous job experience seeking senior level jobs) B Techs, MBAs, MCAs, PGs, Graduates, 3 yr diploma Holders etc.who are willing to work initially as Trainees and later as Engineers / Managers / Programmers / Marketing or Sales Executives etc., will find Mock Interviews conducted under this category very useful.

  • Category – 3 :(For fresh employment seekers - those without any job experience, seeking junior level jobs) Graduates, ITI /ITC Certificate holders, +2/PDC Certificate holders, S.S.L.C (Passed) etc., will find Mock Interviews conducted under this category very useful.

  • Category – 4 :(For employment seekers with previous job experience who want to take up better jobs at a middle or senior level) Those who are presently working as Managers, Executives, Engineers, Doctors, Officers etc., will find Mock Interviews conducted under this category very useful.

  • Category – 5 : (For employment seekers with previous job experience who want to take up better jobs at the junior level) Those who are presently working as Accountants, Clerks, Receptionists, Mechanics, Service Technicians etc. will find Mock Interviews conducted under this category very useful.

Q2. What are the primary reasons for failure at a Job or Placement Interview, even when the candidate is highly qualified for the job ?

A2. The primary reasons why candidates, irrespective of their educational qualification or the post for which they are interviewed , fail in the interview, even though they are eligible for the job / placement are :

  • Improper Body Language or Non-verbal Communication .

Explanation : Whatever be the post to which a candidate is being interviewed, the first aspect that is judged at any interview is the body language of the candidate. In fact, it is the candidate’s body language that sets the tone of the interview . First impressions at an Interview do matter. On entering the interview room, if the candidate’s facial expression indicates lack of self-confidence, nervousness, tension etc. then at the initial stage itself s/he is likely to be judged unfavourably and will have to put in extra efforts to change the impression that s/he created in the beginning . An under-confident candidate is often judged as one who is likely to be less motivated, less productive. A candidate who is not cheerful and appears serious is seen as one with weak social skills and so on. Similarly a candidate who has a weak voice ( i.e., weak verbal communication ) is judged as one who is likely to be less motivated and a poor communicator . In other words; improper body language or non-verbal communication is on of the reasons why many candidates fail in job or placement interviews .

  • Improper Eye Movements ( in case of Panel Interviews ) .

Explanation : Most candidates , due to the lack of self-confidence and proper training , fail to give proper eye contact ( attention ) to the interviewers on a panel . The interviewers who do not receive proper eye contact are likely to feel ignored and thus reduce the marks they give to the candidate . In other words ; no matter how objective an interviewer wants to be, being a human s/he is prone to make subjective assessments . Hence, when an interviewer on a panel of 3 to 5 interviewers does not receive proper attention from the candidate ( due to weak eye contact by the candidate ) s/he feels ignored and reduces the marks given to the candidate thus having an adverse impact on the grand total . Hence, improper eye contact given to the interviewers by the candidate can contribute to his or her failure at a job or placement  interview.

To enable candidates to learn how to improve their eye movements in a very practical way we conduct experiential learning exercises during the Interview training program of two weeks duration, that we conduct regularly. More details can be had in person, on visiting our training center at Calicut. For details click on the button ‘Contact Us’.

  • Politeness

Explanation : An impolite candidate or a candidate who is relatively less polite than other candidates is seen as someone with ‘weak social skills’ and therefore someone who is not a good team player and so on . Failing to greet the interviewers, failing to say ‘thank you’ on being offered a seat, failing to seek permission before placing one’s file on the interviewer’s table may seem to be inconsequential but they are not This is because; due to the limited time available to judge a candidate, such mistakes are seen as ‘weak social skills’ and a candidate with weak social skills is seen as someone who is not a good team player, someone who is unlikely to be effective at persuading people, be they his or her subordinates, colleagues or customers. Hence, lack of politeness can contribute to the candidate’s failure at an interview.

  • Mannerisms.

Explanation : A candidate who has certain unpleasant mannerisms is also seen as someone with ‘weak social skills’. Often candidates are not aware of their mannerisms and what effect it has on others and this is why they continue to display it and thereby lose marks at the interview .

Note : Most candidate are not aware of the impact their body language, voice or mannerisms has on the interviewers and hence it is only prudent to attend a Mock Interview conducted by HRD Professionals who have experience in interviewing candidates and can provide feedback that can be subsequently used for correction and improvement . Furthermore, it is also prudent to learn how to move one’s eye while facing questions from an interview panel of 3 to 5 members and this is best done by attending a crash course on Group Discussions or Public Speaking exercises that we conduct at our training center at Calicut.

  • 'Inability to correctly answer ‘Behavioral Questions’

Explanation : Basically two kinds of questions are asked at an interview and they are ‘Behavioral Questions’ and ‘Technical Questions or Subject Related Questions’. Generally the first few questions at any job or placement interview are ‘Behavioral Questions’ as it is a means of making the candidate comfortable so that s/he can perform well during the course of the interview . An intelligent candidate will use the opening behavioral questions not only to become comfortable but to also project a positive image of himself or herself. For example; the question “Please tell us about yourself ‘ or “Please introduce yourself” can be intelligently used as an opportunity to not only introduce oneself but to also project a positive image. How this can be done will be explained during the Interview Training as the candidate’s CV or Bio-data has to be taken into consideration to provide proper guidance.

  • Why are you interested in working in this company ?
  • If selected, how long will you work with us ?
  • What are your weaknesses ?
  •  What salary do you expect ?
  • Why do you want to change your present job ? ( asked to those with work experience )
  • As a Fresher, how will you overcome your inexperience ?…etc.

If you think that you can be asked such behavioral questions at job or placement interview then our HRD Professionals can guide you and clear your doubts as to how you can truthfully and correctly answer these and many more such behavioral questions. Furthermore our HRD Professionals & Interviewers will also explain how behavioral questions are used to assess a candidate’s Personality and what needs to be done to develop one’s personality to improve one’s chances of success at any Interview.

  • Unimpressive CV or Bio-data - in terms of format / language / content.

Explanation : During the early stages of an interview, a candidate will be asked behavioral questions related to his or her CV or Bio-data . Keeping the competition in mind, a candidate must present a bio-data that is attractive in terms of ; format, presentation style, language and content . A bio-data that doesn’t have a proper format may suggest to the interviewer that the candidate is not aware of the current trends and is therefore likely to be a slow learner and thus slow to adapt to change . Similarly, a bio-data that has content which doesn’t suggest that the candidate is keen on extra-curricular activities or on personality development is likely to make the interviewer assess the candidate as a weak team player and so on. Furthermore, it may so happen that a candidate’s bio-data contains ‘time gaps’ making the interviewers to think that the candidate was idle for long periods of time and so on. In such cases if a candidate is not able to give a positive explanation of an aspect of his or her bio-data that apparently looks negative, then s/he is likely to fail in the interview.

Note : Our HRD Professionals will guide candidates during the Interview Training Program ( Value Added ) on how not to be untruthful yet present a negative aspect of a bio-data in a positive manner and thus increase the chances of a success in the interview .Those who would like their bio-data to be assessed and the correct format , presentation style etc. be explained to them, can do so during the Interview Training. If you would like to get your bio-data drafted and printed in the correct format, without having to undergo the Interview Training Program, you can do so but you must come to our training center to avail of the said services.

  • Inability to correctly answer ‘Technical Questions or Subject Related Questions’

Explanation : There are basically two reasons why candidate’s are not able to answer technical questions correctly when interviewed by reputed companies. Firstly, it is due to lack of knowledge and secondly it is due to the inability of the candidate to speak fluently in good English ( grammatically correct English ) and express himself or herself in a manner that can be easily understood by the interviewers. A candidate who knows the correct answer to the technical question asked by an interviewer but expresses himself or herself in English punctuated by many grammar mistakes leaves a weak impression on the Interviewers and in a highly competitive situation is unlikely to be selected. Similarly, a candidate who speaks good English but is repeatedly unable to give the correct answer to various technical questions due to the lack of knowledge, is seen as a weak learner and someone ineligible for the job under consideration. To be able to correctly answer technical questions, a candidate must have good theoretical knowledge of the core subjects that form the foundation of the job for which s/he is being considered for appointment and also the ability to give the answers in good English.

  • Tendency to ‘Tell’ rather than ‘Sell’ .

Explanation : Most candidates tend too mechanically answer the questions that are asked during a job or placement interview and are thus not able to bring out there best or showcase their talents effectively. To succeed at any Job or Placement Interview a candidate must not mechanically answer questions irrespective of whether the question is a behavioral one or a technical one. In other words, when a candidate answers a question , especially a behavioural one, s/he must answer it in a such a way that the interviewer is able to see the advantages of selecting the candidate. Just as a salesman convinces a customer of the advantages of buying a particular product, similarly a candidate must think of his candidature as a product and make attempts at the interview to subtly convince the interviewers of the advantages of selecting him / her. ( How a candidate can subtly sell his or her candidature during an interview will be explained during the interview training program )

Note : In interviews conducted by Banks, Reputed Companies etc., the competition is often so narrow that, even small mistakes committed by a candidate can result in failure. For example; being confident and cheerful at an interview may look unimportant . However, an under-confident and serious looking candidate is seen by interviewers as someone with “low levels of motivation” and ‘weak social skills’ and therefore someone who is ‘not a good team player’ thus leading to the rejection of the candidate . To succeed in any interview, especially those conducted by reputed companies, a candidate must prepare thoroughly by undergoing both ; group centric training that provides experiential learning for building higher level of self-confidence, improve body language etc. and also training with individual attention that provides opportunities to learn how to answer behavioral questions that match one’s personality, circumstances etc...

TO DRAFT AND PRINT AN IMPRESSIVE CV or BIO-DATA

Even before an Interviewer meets a candidate at the Job or Placement Interview, s/he first examines the candidate’s CV / Bio-data. Hence, it is the CV or Bio-data of a candidate that creates a ‘First Impression’ in the mind of the Interviewer and must therefore be prepared carefully following the guidelines mentioned below.

  1. The ‘First Impression’ that your CV creates in an HR Manager or Interviewer must be very positive. Using appropriate fonts, type styles, paper etc., you can make your CV look “Formal” yet “Impressive”. Remember, the HR Manager or Interviewer sees your CV even before s/he meets you at the Interview and since first impressions matter you must prepare and present an impressive CV as and when you apply for the job.

  2. The ’Format ’ of your CV must indicate that you know the current rules of preparing a CV otherwise you may be assessed even before the interview as ; a candidate with old and rigid ideas who maybe unwilling to change and adapt to new rules / expectations - of the company. The first and foremost rule to be followed when preparing a modern CV is that it must be in the reverse chronological format . ( If your DTP Centre is not aware of these facts, please visit our office at YMCA Cross Road, ( Near NOKIA – IDBI Bank ) Calicut –1 . Phone : 2360920 or 2760795 . We will help you to draft or redraft and print your CV or Bio-data. )

  3. The ‘Career Objective’ on your CV must indicate that it is not a copy paste and that it matches your personality and your overall career plan. If the answers that you give on being asked behavioral questions related to your career plan, ambition etc. are contradictory or are at variance to the Career Objective that you have mentioned in your CV then your chances of being selected for appointment will diminish . Hence, it is in your best interest to consult our HR Professionals before finalizing your ‘Career Objective Statement’ during the Interview Training Program.

  4. The ‘Content’ of your CV must indicate that you are a “Continuous Learner”. If you have scored low marks in the board / university exams, you should tactfully cover it with add-on Diplomas or Certificates – relevant to your Career . If you have no extra-curricular activities to mention, you must tactfully cover it with details of self-improvement courses you have attended and so on to indicate that ; you are keen on self-improvement and therefore open to new ideas and willing to quickly adapt and change when required.
The certificates that you receive from us on undergoing the various mentoring programs we conduct, can be mentioned in your CV or Bio-data under the heading ‘Self-improvement Programs Attended’ and thus be used to make your bio-data’s content more attractive. In other words, when an Interviewer observes that you have undergone self-improvement training on your own initiative, s/he will consider you as a motivated person who takes initiative and is a continuous learner with a mind open to new ideas and therefore quick to adapt to change and that this nature of yours will also be of benefit to the company - that interviews you . If such a ‘positive first impression’ emerges about you, before the interview or during the early stages of an interview, it will be to your advantage .
