If you believe that, irrespective of the domain or sector in which a commercial enterprise operates ; employees must become continuous learners for the enterprise to remain competitive in the evolving Knowledge Economy and that a ‘Training Program’ must have more of substance rather than presentation style and must also be designed to present logical and compelling concepts that can first bring about Attitudinal Change and subsequently Behavioural Change in the participants, then please read on to understand our core beliefs about Human Resource Development in commercial enterprises.

 

The training programs and workshops we conduct , purposefully aim to influence the Thinking Process of the participants ( Executives , Staff etc. ) rather than their Emotional Process so as to first bring aboutattitudinal change and subsequent behavioural changes - that are essential, not only to cope with the changing economic environment but to also grow and prosper.

It is our firm belief that ; for training programs to be effective, the method of facilitation to be adopted must emphasize “Reflective Thinking”-that is essential for triggering attitudinal changes in the short term and behavioral changes in the long term – through refresher training programs. Fun-filled activity based learning tend to give greater emphasis to  form  rather than substance and the risk of adopting this method of facilitation is that it can distract the “Learner” and lower the internalizing of “Concepts” that subsequently bring about Attitudinal and Behavioural Changes. To engage in effective “Reflective Thinking” a participant’s mind should not be excited or distracted with fun-filled activities. However, if an “activity” or “game” can convey a learning point it can be adopted provided it is conducted in such a way that the learner gets the message ( learning point ) and doesn’t  miss it as his / her mind was distracted by the fun-filled activity.

 

Participants generally like “fun-filled activity” as it is enjoyable and disengages the mind from “Constructive / Reflective Thinking”  which is a dull and difficult task and yet the essence of effective learning and the trigger for subsequent behavioural change. However, what the participants feel is enjoyable needn’t be cost-effective for the organization.

 

When the future looks uncertain, which is often the case, the need to occasionally boost the sagging motivation and team spirit of employees with inspirational messages becomes critical – primarily, to increase productivity and profitability. Hence, our training programs present inspirational messages from time to time such that it increases motivation and inspires employees to achieve higher levels of performance. Furthermore, We believe that training programs must be made interesting to overcome day long learning fatigue( our faculty will provide new knowledge in an interesting mannerusing multimedia teaching aids where necessary ) , must be participative ( experience sharing, group discussion, role play,  case study methodology will be followed wherever relevant ) and it must encourage Reflective Thinking - that is essential for triggering attitudinal and behavioral changes.


Our faculty also take special care to make their facilitation process “culture sensitive”as they believe that Indians unlike Westerners are a highly heterogeneous group  with different cultural affinities and their sensitivities must be taken into account otherwise many of those attending the training program are likely to be offended or distracted. This could adversely affect the objective of the training program that is meant to bring about desirable behavioral improvements that subsequently ( through refresher programs )  lead to behavioural changes – essential, not only to cope with the changing economic environment but to also grow and prosper. For example; in the Western context an elderly employee ( participant ) may be directly addressed by his first name while in our case keeping the cultural context in mind an elderly participant  will not be address directly by his name and instead be addressed as Shri. / Smt. or Mr./ Mrs. . …………. by our faculty. Similarly humor that is gender sensitive or examples in which women are shown in a weak position will not be made by our faculty.

A question that seems to bother many in the higher echelons of Management, when they decide to engage a guest faculty to conduct a training program for their Executives or Staff is very often the following : Why is it that employees who undergo behavioral training and appear to be ‘motivated’ for a few days after the training program, are unable to sustain the “motivation” for a longer period of time ? ”. DOES OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM UNINTENTIONALY DISCOURAGE GENUINE TEAM WORK IN COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES ?

 

 Developing a team centric and employee friendly work culture that also provides opportunities for professional and personal growth is essential in more than one way. Unfortunately, our education system unintentionally discourages genuine team work in commercial enterprises and this needs to be understood first before any remedial action is planned. 
The highly competitive nature of our school - college examination system has unintentionally made most employees ( formerly students ) basically individualistic and some of them self-centric – irrespective of which sector

 

they work in.  Most Executives and Staff thus find it difficult to engage in genuine team work ( i.e. to genuinely care & share - with their colleagues , subordinates etc. ) due to the wrong habits ( individualistic / self-centric behaviour ) that they have unintentionally acquired during their long course of study in various educational institutions. This is why formal team training becomes essential – to make employees unlearn and subsequentlyeliminate damaging work habits that lower a commercial enterprise’s productivity and profitability. Though the education system can afford to be complacent about the unintentional consequences of its actions due to the lack of a better alternative, private enterprises cannot afford to do so as the losses incurred due to ineffective team work has to be borne privately or individually – in case of proprietorship and partnership firms.


A question that is likely to arise at this stage is; “How do you get employees who may have unknowingly picked up individualistic or self-centric work habits to change their behavior in favour of team work ?”. Admittedly, changing the behaviour of a person who has picked up damaging work habits is not easy, however we believe it can be done through reflective thinking oriented training that triggers attitudinal change and  subsequently  activates behavioural changes that nurture team work . A person who undergoes such training conducted by us in English or Malayalam, is unlikely to change his behaviour immediately after attending one such program and will have to undergo repetitive refresher training that reinforce the learning previously done and takes the participants to the next higher level of learning. ( Our team training programs will provide insights and compelling logic on the professional and personal advantages of team work that will trigger an attitudinal change and subsequently through refresher training our faculty will bring about behavioral changes that favour genuine team work ). How long such refresher training has to be administered before visible changes are seen in an employee depends on the employee. In some cases the changes will be noticed after two or three programs while in others it may take longer. Though refresher training programs cannot guarantee a behavioural change in each employee within a given time frame,  it certainly can assure visible changes sooner or later in most employees who undergo refresher programs as well. Fortunately, a company or firm needn’t take any financial risk in engaging our faculty to conduct a “Motivation & Team Training Program”  or its refresher programs as explained in our “Pay-only-if-fully-satisfied Policy” mentioned on the home page of this website. You need pay the faculty fee if the feedback received from you employees and your own observation leads you to believe that the value added team training program conducted for your employees or subordinates was useful to them and the learning that has taken place has the potential to bring about desirable behavioural changes in the future.

Till a few years ago, a company or employer played a key role in the  selection and appointment of  a candidate . Much of that  has changed.  Faced with numerous choices, talented candidates today assess the company  and its work culture before taking up the offer of appointment and hence it is upto the company or employer to take pro-active measures to build a team centric and employee friendly work culture that also provides opportunities for professional and personal growth – considered by talented employees as an attractive proposition for appointment, in addition to the remuneration offered .

This is why building , sooner rather than later, a team centric and employee friendly work culture that provides opportunities for professional and personal growth becomes all the more essential. ( In a knowledge economy it is the knowledge of processes, customers, suppliers, competitors etc. that creates a competitive edge and since such knowledge resides in the minds of the employees, talented employees who are basically knowledge workers become the most critical competitive strength of a commercial enterprise – big or small. A receptionist or a sales executive is today more of a “knowledge worker”  than a few years ago, who has to juggle customer related information in the mind and the mishandling or misuse of which can cost a company dearly. Admittedly, the Indian economy or for that matter the World economy has not yet been transformed into a full fledged knowledge economy and not all workers are knowledge workers, yet the transformation is undeniably taking place and this is why there is so much uncertainty in the economy – primarily because we are in a period of transition )

Commercial enterprise both big and small that are growth oriented have to overcome their “industrial economy mind-set” with which they traditionally view employees and develop a new paradigm for employee engagement. Companies need to understand that; when a talented employee assess a company to decide on accepting an offer of appointment, it is not the pay & perks that primarily attracts him. Pay and perks are certainly taken into consideration but to a talented employee what matters most after being assured of a fair remuneration is the work culture of the company . To the new generation employee an attractive work environment must provide potential for growth followed by companionship and recognition – a factor that is often taken for granted and hence generally overlooked by the management . Humans are social animals and the need for companionship and recognition is a basic instinct that seeks fulfillment and when left unfulfilled quickly drives the employee into a state of de-motivation and low personal productivity which when left untreated for long ends up being labeled as  “lack of employee loyalty” or “unavoidable employee attrition”. Call it organizational politics, turf fights or by any other name, the fact remains that ; a company that cannot provide a work environment that nurtures a team centric and employee friendly work culture  will find it increasingly difficult to attract and retain talented employees in the years ahead and will soon be on the road to stalled growth and subsequent demise.

In a retail environment it is the sales & frontline staff with whom customers interact the most . Very often it is the courteous and helpful behaviour of the sales & frontline staff that bring customers back for repeat purchases and discourteous behaviour that makes them reduce their purchases and at times decide on “never coming back”. If the sales & frontline staff can be oriented to consider customers as the one’s who not only pay their salary but also give them the opportunity for genuine personality development, then frontline staff will not only be happy to serve friendly customers but will also be willing to consider demanding customers as opportunities rather than problems.

How quickly the employees of a commercial enterprise can respond to the fast paced changes taking place in the economy can today make the difference between success and failure of a Project or the marketing of a product. Just as cost over runs due to ineffective time management adversely effect a Project so also does ineffective time management result in “opportunities lost” - when marketing products & services.

The term ‘Time Management’ is actually a misnomer because no one can manage time as such. However, one can certainly manage oneself better through greater self-disciple in a manner that one can get the best out of the limited time available.
